Here are my suggestion.

There are many cars that have been invented since Henry Ford first introduced the Model T. In todays society, the number of different models make our choices limitless. With a new car being released every year it is very difficult to compile a list of vehicles that one would like to own. Like many of the residents of my neighborhood, I feel a strong pull towards imported cars, particularly from Japan.

Though it is difficult, here is my attempt at putting a list together.

1)1995 Nissan Skyline GTR33- Every Nissan enthusiasts dream, the older models of the Skyline are difficult to obtain in the United States. With a sleek body style, and a great amount of power under the hood, the Nissan Skyline GTR33 makes the idea of easily leaving a racing opponent in the dust a reality.

2)1997 Toyota Supra VeilSide Edition- While not as sleek as the Skyline, the Toyota Supra is, in my opinion, one of the best tuners available to the automotive world. The Supra's Targa top makes riding in the summer months more enjoyable than any other car I know. This car packs a serious punch, which you can feel as it ripples past you.

3)2003 Infiniti G35- Called the Nissan Skyline GTR35 in Japan, the Infiniti G35, is a highly customizable car. Its body style is definitely a head turner.

4)1992 Nissan 300zx- A precursor to Nissan's more modernized Nissan 350z, the 300zx is one car that looks nice, no matter the color or the modifications on it.

5)1994 Nissan 240sx- Very similar to the 300zx, the Nissan 240sx is very customizable and comes with a lot of power under the hood.

6)2003 Nissan 350z- One of Nissan's more luxurious tuners, the 350z is a very common car, very customizable, and can do more than most cars when driven correctly.

7)2005 Dodge Viper- After Dodge's track record, the Viper was a breath of fresh air for both Dodge and its consumers. With a V8 in it, this car pushes more torque than many of today's cars.

8)2008 Chevy Malibu- Taking a step away from the sporty type cars, Chevy Malibu is a very luxurious car that comes stock with everything you need.

9)2007 Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo- Very sleek powerful car.

10)2008 Jaguar XKR- Jaguar has become one of the manufacturers that haunts the dreams of little kids since the James Bond movies have been released. With the XKR, Jaguar continues its luxurious looks and keeps up with its swift engines.

Here are my thought about Import VS. North American cars.

The differences between Imports and North American Cars is as easy as price, quality and where they are actually made.

Where the vehicle is actually assembled is considered as the country of origin or domestic vehicles. See the American Automobile Labeling Act regarding this issue. According to Wikipedia the "Big Three" Ford, General Motors and Chrysler are considered domestic as they are primarily assembled in America for sale in the United States.

There are other import manufacturers with assembly plants in the United States such as Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Mazda for example. I would like to remind readers that several of the import companies are now subdivisions of the "Big Three" including Mazda, a division of Ford Motor Company.

The prices and quality tend to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer regardless of company. The prices will be determined by how the company's stockholders, unions and board of trustees will require due to costs, benefit packages and salaries. It is fairly obvious in the past few years that quality is a big issue.

Many times you turn on the news this past year alone and hear of a recall of some kind. Mostly by the "Big Three" while even their subdivisions are not having these issues unless in the case of Ford/Mazda where some models utilize the same parts/styles with different names on the vehicles.

I am not implying that Ford/Mazda have had any massive recalls that have not been announced merely pointing out the quality vs. models as utilized scenario. It used merely as an example of some of the manufacturers using the same platform for several models under different name brands. As when Ford sold the Mercury Voyager which was also a Nissan Quest under a joint venture between the two companies.

The Nissan Grand Livina had finally arrived here and was made known to the public 2 days ago in a small launch at Heritage Mansion, in Kuala Lumpur. Days ago, I collected the Mazda BT-50 pick-up truck for test drive and only returned it this morning. So, I had to bring the truck to the launch and was lucky to find a spot to park the Mazda. The ceremony started late, with an opening speech by the Executive Director of Edaran Tan Chong Motors, Dato’ Ang Bon Beng. The speech was concluded with a special message by Nissan’s CEO, Carlos Ghosn, in a pre-recorded video speech. According to Ghosn, the Grand Livina has been tailored to the needs of the ASEAN users, and is not derived from any European Nissan make.

There I was, cramming with journalists and photographers from other publications, finding the best possible spot for some photo snapping. As it was revealed, photographers were shooting away on the new MPV. I find it a bit low and looks very similar to the Honda Stream, also with a low stature.

Here are some pictures of the new MPV, which has been a best selling MPV in Indonesia, and has also won several awards from the same country and from China.

From a general scrutiny on the MPV, some parts looked a bit cheap - the rear door where the telescopic bars were a bit familiar to that of a Kancil. The folding of the 2nd row seats, the metal bars were quite thin and simply designed. The fittings of the plastics were not bad though, the same goes for the fabrics used on the cushions.

The Grand Livina shares a lot of similarities as the Latio especially on the door panels and the dashboard. Once again, the glove box (or luggage box, more like it) were as cavernous as the Latio too. For the rear passengers, those who worry about not getting enough air-cond, fret not as there is a dedicated blower situated behind the handbrake console.

Available in 2 variants, the Grand Livina is offered in the 1.6L and 1.8L engines. The 1.6L (automatic) is at RM86,600, whereas the manual version is priced at RM82,800. The 1.8L is only available in automatic transmission and with C-VTC (Continuous Variable-valve Timing Control) is fixed at RM95,300.


There was a video presentation of the Grand Livina at the launch where there were a comparison test. The video showed the Grand Livina against the Toyota Innova. As far as overall vehicle quality is concerned, the Grand Livina scored in almost every aspect of safety, handling and pricing. Another competitor that would be hit hard would be the new Honda Stream, that also drives like a car but seats like an MPV.

The Grand Livina would certainly do well in Malaysia thanks to its pricing and quality of the vehicle. Getting an MPV at the price below RM100k is surely a good deal. Nissan is offering a 3-year or 100,000 km warranty for any new Grand Livina purchase.
